KNX and Intercom: Two Different Worlds

KNX building automation and intercom (video door phone) systems are the two systems you come across most often in modern residential and hotel projects. Both may look like a "smart home" from the outside, but they serve entirely different purposes. KNX is an open, international standard for home and building automation (ISO/IEC 14543-3, EN 50090). KNX-certified switches, sensors and actuators from different manufacturers can work together on the same line. Building on experience in the field since 2003, today our own team designs and installs KNX projects under the Kodsis roof.

Ecosystem Breadth and Brand Independence

According to KNX Association, the current KNX ecosystem includes more than 500 manufacturers and over 8,000 certified products. That breadth means you can choose the devices that best suit the project from different manufacturers. A homeowner may want to add smart curtains, a different climate solution or a new automation function years after buying the house. Because KNX is an open standard, a system built properly from the start can be extended later. When automation relies on a single intercom brand's ecosystem, devices from different brands often don't work together, and a simple request can mean replacing much of the infrastructure. Lighting, curtains and blinds, heating and cooling, ventilation, energy visibility, access control and security functions can all be managed over KNX; which functions are used depends on the devices chosen.

Brand dependency in intercom ecosystems can lead to the entire system being replaced in future upgrades. KNX offers brand-independent freedom.

Why Choose a KNX Infrastructure?

Ecosystem Breadth

KNX-certified products from different manufacturers work together on the same line. Most intercom systems are tied to a single brand.

Wiring and Reliability

KNX uses distributed architecture (green bus line). If one switch fails, the rest of the home continues to work uninterrupted.

Functional Flexibility

Different scenes can be assigned to a single button. With setups like "Leaving Home", lights, blinds and climate are controlled with one touch.

Remote Access and Energy

With suitable devices, you can track energy consumption in a mobile app and get notified about events such as water leaks.

Open Standard Advantage

KNX Advantages for a Future-Ready Project

Full freedom in future upgrades with brand independence.
Thanks to the distributed architecture, a single faulty device doesn't stop the whole system.
Lighting, curtains, heating-cooling and security are managed from a single panel.
For investors pursuing certification, we build a properly designed automation infrastructure that supports energy-efficiency goals. Certification application and consultancy are not part of our service.
An infrastructure that can be extended later with products from different manufacturers.
Proven technology with roots in the early 1990s, defined by the international standard ISO/IEC 14543-3.
Integration with solar and other energy systems using suitable devices.

How Do KNX and Intercom Work Together?

Night Visitor Scenario: When the doorbell rings, the KNX system turns on the living room lights at a dim level with the intercom signal, creating a non-glaring welcome ambiance.

Coming Home (Welcome): When the card is read at the building entrance and the door is opened, KNX triggers the "Coming Home" scenario: Hall lights turn on, alarm is deactivated and climate control switches to comfort mode.

Weather-Responsive Comfort: Sensors detecting outdoor conditions automatically adjust blinds based on sun angle to help balance indoor temperature and reduce the load on the air conditioning.

Investment in the Future: How Should Wiring Be Planned in New Projects?

To ensure future flexibility in a newly built or rough-structure project, the wiring infrastructure should be planned according to the following 3 golden rules:

Frequently Asked Questions

No. KNX runs locally, so switches and scenes keep working when the internet is down. The internet is only needed for remote access and notifications.

We set up a simple, visual interface that can be used from a tablet or computer. After handover, we train your team on how to use it.

Yes, with suitable metering devices. You can see how much each circuit or room consumes; any savings depend on how that information is used. We cover power outages and energy visibility in our post "From a Coin in the Freezer to KNX".

If requested, a show-apartment setup can be planned within the project scope; it is billed reasonably based on materials and labour costs.

It depends on the size and scope of the project; we confirm the schedule after the site survey. When the system is planned early, installation runs in parallel with the electrical and mechanical work.5

Warranty depends on the manufacturer's warranty for the chosen devices and the scope of the contract. We provide user training after handover, and to the new owner if the property is sold. In Kuşadası, we provide same-day support where possible if something goes wrong.

Cost depends on the scope of the project and the devices chosen. When the system is planned at the electrical design stage, the infrastructure is easier to install and involves less work than changes made later. After a free site survey, we prepare a quote for your project.

Yes. KNX devices can be added to existing buildings if there is space in the distribution board; wireless options such as Zigbee/WiFi are planned during the site survey according to the customer's request. We check suitability on site during a free survey. In hotels, we plan the work schedule together with the management.

As your brand-independent solution partner, Kodsis works with proven brands and protocols that best fit each project. For smart building and hotel automation, we build on the KNX standard. See our Brands page for the current list of brands we work with.

It is the meeting of IP-based intercoms and KNX touch panels on the same network. Through a single screen, you can both see and open the door for the visitor and manage the home's lights/curtains. It provides video, live streaming, visitor logs and bidirectional rich data transfer. Requires network infrastructure, has high cost and capabilities; completely open to the future.

It is the connection of the intercom's rear outputs to KNX binary input modules. It only carries basic on/off (trigger) signals. It does not carry video, but it is simple, economical and reliable at the hardware level, even if the network fails.

SIP Protocol is recommended for new and luxury projects due to its rich features. However, if the budget is limited or maximum hardware robustness is desired, the Dry Contact method is an excellent alternative.

We review on site the number of rooms or units, the functions to be controlled (lighting, shading, climate, key-card room energy control and similar), the panel condition and existing wiring. The survey is free; we prepare a project-specific quote from this information.

Yes. We handle the survey, design, device supply, installation, programming and user training as a single provider. Our KNX-certified team commissions and hands over the system.

Yes, as integration. We supply smart devices such as flood sensors, gas and water shut-off valves and irrigation valves and connect them to the automation; we can also take the alarm output of an existing fire panel into the system for notifications and scenarios. We do not carry out the fire, gas or irrigation installations themselves; those are handled by the relevant licensed contractors.

The decision is made during the survey based on free panel space, whether existing conduits can be reused and the operating schedule of the business. In some projects wired KNX and wireless devices can be combined.

During rough construction, plan the KNX bus line, Cat6 for the intercom and spare conduits. We cover the details in our KNX and intercom article.
