Fiber Optic vs. Copper Cabling: Choosing the Right Infrastructure Based on Needs, Distance, and Budget

 
When building a corporate network infrastructure or upgrading the existing one, one of the most fundamental questions is: Fiber optic or copper cabling? The answer depends on your business's physical structure, bandwidth requirements, and budget. Copper Cabling (Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7)

Today, the vast majority of office connections are still provided through copper cabling (Ethernet).
  • Advantages: Installation cost is lower compared to fiber optic. It supports PoE (Power over Ethernet), which carries both data and electricity to devices such as switches, IP phones, and security cameras. Termination and maintenance processes are more practical.
  • Disadvantages: Maximum data transmission distance is limited to 100 meters. It can be affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI). It may be insufficient for future speed requirements of 40Gbps and above.
 

Fiber Optic Cabling (Single-mode and Multi-mode)

Fiber optic, which enables data to be transmitted at the speed of light, is the backbone of modern infrastructures.
  • Advantages: There is virtually no distance limit (kilometers with Single-mode). It is absolutely not affected by electromagnetic interference. It offers very high bandwidth (10G, 40G, 100G and above). It is the safest investment for the future.
  • Disadvantages: Material and labor costs are higher compared to copper. Installation requires precision (fusion splicing machine, etc.). It cannot carry electricity directly to devices (does not support PoE).
 

Which Technology Should Be Chosen for Which Scenario?

  • Office Desk Connections: Copper Cabling (Cat6a) is the most logical and cost-effective solution for employee computers, IP phones, and wireless access points.
  • Intra-Building Backbone and Inter-Floor Connections: Fiber Optic is essential for connecting switches and server rooms to each other.
  • Inter-Campus or External Building Connections: Fiber Optic should definitely be used for connections between different buildings or inter-city connections.
